What Is llms.txt?

llms.txt is an emerging convention for sites that want to summarize key pages for AI crawlers that choose to read it. Google Search Central (May 2026) states Google Search ignores llms.txt for rankings and generative AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. For dealerships, the file is low-cost hygiene for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other non-Google systems that may opt in. Citation-worthy content, schema markup, crawler access, and standard SEO drive visibility on the surfaces shoppers actually use.
