An AI-generated summary that appears at the top of Google search results, synthesizing information from multiple web sources to answer a query directly.

What Is AIO (AI Overview)?

AI Overviews (AIOs) are Google's implementation of generative AI in search results. They appear above traditional organic results and provide synthesized answers with inline citations. Nationally, AIOs appeared in roughly 16% of US searches as of early 2026 (Semrush and related industry surveys; all query types). US automotive intent studies show much higher rates on informational queries (about 97%) than transactional inventory queries (about 10.5%; Digital Dealer, 1,600-query study, early 2026). Google Search Central (May 2026) says optimizing for them is still SEO. Winning strategies are answer-first content, baseline schema, topical authority, and local signals.
