GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
The practice of optimizing content to earn citations from AI answer tools, while recognizing that Google classifies generative AI optimization as still SEO for Google Search.

What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is a useful label for cross-engine citation work on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and similar systems. Google Search Central (May 2026) states that optimizing for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode is still SEO, not a separate Google discipline. ChatGPT and Perplexity use different retrieval, so GEO as a cross-engine playbook still matters. Strategies include answer-first content, baseline schema and technical SEO, topical authority, crawler access, and reproducible measurement rather than vanity AI rank reports.
