What Is Canonical Tag?
Canonical tags (rel="canonical") are critical for dealership websites because inventory pages often create duplicate content scenarios. A single vehicle might be accessible through multiple URL paths - filtered SRP views, direct VDP URLs, category pages, and cross-linked pages. Without proper canonical tags, search engines may split ranking signals across these duplicate URLs or choose the wrong version to index. Canonical tags consolidate authority to the preferred URL. They're also important for model landing pages, service pages, and location pages that may share similar content across multi-location dealer group websites.
